The Lifecycle of a Mount Vernon Bridge

Back in August 2004, I placed on my website, most of the way down the page, an item about Mount Vernon's 2nd Street bridge that spans I-5. It had been problematic for decades because it had the lowest clearance of any bridge over I-5, occassionally catching an unwary truck driver. I took pictures of it just before they replaced it- in the interim they have torn it down and built a new, higher and wider one. Behold:

The new bridge.

The historic bridge.

The old bridge was utilitarian.

The new one is kind of fancy...

The new bridge opened a while back,

and they put on the finishing touches in time for the Tulip Festival.

The view south, back into town, from near the top of the bridge.

It was quite the project, tearing out the old bridge and having to shut down portions of the freeway underneath for safety.

Wonder how long this one will last? Maybe someone in the future will report on that...
