Jay Eckert Visits Historic Statue
October 7, 2005

Mount Vernon dedicated a new statue October 1st and we went downtown to see it today, almost a week later... Jasper Gates was the first man to file a homestead claim on the property that became the City of Mount Vernon. During his lifetime he helped develop the city and county. The granite sculpture of Jasper Gates and his grandson John Knox (carrying buckets of vegetables from their garden), is located on the corner of First and Gates Streets. This was the original site of Gate's first cabin and garden. The project was conceived by historian Dick Fallis of Mount Vernon and made a reality by the Mount Vernon Arts Commission and artist Tracy Powell of Anacortes.
